Door to door against a change of train
Three hundred and ten kilometres, three hours fifteen: a real journey, and one that compares honestly. The train first. No direct service exists: the French coastal line terminates at Ventimiglia, and that is where the connection into the Italian network is made, with a change of train and two separate ticket systems.
The plane next. One hour of flight time reads well on a comparison site, but it assumes check-in, security, waiting and two ground journeys at each end. We publish no measured door-to-door figure for flying, because we have none, and we do not claim the car is always faster.
What the car adds is measurable in another way: one vehicle from Terminal 2 to the Milan address, bags loaded once, a departure time you choose, and a price confirmed before you leave. For three or four people travelling together the arithmetic changes completely.
Two Milanese zones, two different rules
Milan runs two schemes on top of each other, and confusing them is expensive. Area C is a charged limited traffic zone covering the Cerchia dei Bastioni, the historic centre. The city states it is active all year, Monday to Friday from 07:30 to 19:30, public holidays excluded. The daily ticket costs €7.50 and runs from the first entry until 19:30 the same day.
Area B is something else: a far wider low emission zone, free of charge, also active Monday to Friday from 07:30 to 19:30, which bars access according to the vehicle’s Euro standard. Its control gates number in the hundreds.
One point is worth stating because it is often repeated wrongly: several sites announce an extension of Area C to Saturdays and Sundays since January 2026. The city’s own page, updated on 22 June 2026, says the opposite. We follow the city.
What really stretches those three hours fifteen
Three things, and none of them is speed. The first is the border: France reinstated checks until 31 October 2026, and every passenger needs an identity document. The second is the entry into Milan, where the address decides the zone and therefore the formality. The third is the rest stop, which is not optional on a run of this length.
Hire cars with driver of up to nine seats are exempt in Milan if the plate is registered in advance. That is arranged before departure, not in front of a gate. The fare does not move: €800 in a saloon, €950 in a van, tolls in both countries included.
