Chauffeur service

Chauffeur service in Villefranche-sur-Mer: call days

The bay is 16 km and 25 minutes from Nice airport along the lower corniche. Your fare is confirmed within one hour, tolls and parking included. Cruise ships stay at anchor: passengers land by tender, inside a secured port area.

Why no cruise ship berths here

The bay of Villefranche-sur-Mer is deep, and the port is not. The port authority describes a Port de la Santé of 0.8 hectare, with 230 metres of quay, 51 mooring rings and 1,700 square metres of hard standing. It also lists two French Navy mooring buoys, of 10,000 and 35,000 tonnes, set in the bay.

That is the physical explanation: ships stay at anchor and transfer passengers by tender. Landing happens at a quay inside a secured area, alongside a maritime terminal. More than 200,000 cruise passengers come through each year — 222,671 in 2019, according to the same source.

For a chauffeur the consequence is clear. You do not pull up at the gangway. You agree a public landmark outside the perimeter, and a time. That is far easier to say the night before than to improvise by phone while a thousand people disembark at once.

Thirty free minutes at the Wilson car park

Three barrier-controlled car parks frame the old town, and their free periods are not the same. Wilson, 104 spaces, gives 30 minutes. Barmassa, 179 spaces, gives one hour. Marinières, 259 spaces, gives none. Beyond that, the hourly rate is 1.80 €.

Wilson is the closest to the old town, and its 30 minutes are enough to load suitcases without racing the clock. It is the landmark to give when the maritime terminal is not usable. The town’s parking office is on quai Ponchardier.

Two brochures from the same tourist office give different seasonal free periods for these car parks. So we publish no free-parking dates at all: they are checked on site, at the barrier.

Twenty free minutes on the street, by plate

On the street, two systems coexist. Metered zones run every day from 9 am to noon and from 2 pm to 7 pm, except public holidays, with 20 free minutes obtained by entering the first four characters of the plate. Blue-disc zones require a disc from Monday to Friday, 8 am to 6 pm, and Saturday 8 am to 2 pm, for one hour.

One last detail, useful and rarely published: the tourist office lists the two filling stations in the area. One on the lower corniche, at 1280 boulevard Napoléon III, open 7 am to 9 pm. One on the middle corniche, at 1 boulevard de la Corne d’Or, open around the clock. On a night run back to the airport, that is the sort of thing that matters.

Local details and sources

Cruise passengers land inside a secured port area: no vehicle can wait at the foot of the gangway, so the pick-up is set at a public landmark outside the perimeter.

Before you arrive

Your questions.

Why do cruise ships stay out in the bay instead of berthing?

Because there is no berth for them. The port authority describes two French Navy mooring buoys, of 10,000 and 35,000 tonnes, set in the bay, and a Port de la Santé with only 230 metres of quay. Passengers are transferred by tender to the maritime terminal.

Can a car wait at the foot of the gangway on a call day?

No. The landing quay and the maritime terminal sit inside a secured port area, which rules out parking a vehicle in front of the gangway. The pick-up is arranged at a public landmark agreed in advance, outside the perimeter, at a time set with the ship.

Which car park gives enough time to load luggage without paying?

The Wilson car park, 104 spaces, allows 30 free minutes. The Barmassa car park, 179 spaces, allows one hour. The Marinières car park has 259 spaces. All three are barrier-controlled and charged at 1.80 € an hour beyond the free period.

Why is the fare not fixed straight away?

Because this fare has not yet been validated for this commune. The amount is therefore confirmed to you within one hour of your request, tolls and parking included. Until it is confirmed, no payment is opened: it is a quote, not a paid booking.
